Puerto Vallarta Fiestas Patrias Schedule of Events

Here in Puerto Vallarta, the festivities take place on the Plaza Principal, in front of La Presidencia and on the Malecón. There will be traditional Mexican dancers and musical groups, including Mariachis, at Los Arcos Amphitheater.

September is the month when Mexico celebrates Fiestas Patrias, or Mexican Independence with the Grito of "Viva Mexico!"

This year marks the 196th Anniversary of Mexico's Independence, and here in Puerto Vallarta, streets, homes and businesses are already decorated with the red, white and green of the Mexican flag in preparation for the special events planned for the Independence Day celebrations.

Wednesday, September 13th
Anniversary of the Battle of Chapultepec Castle

• 8 am - Raising of the flag to half mast in the Main Square

• 9 am - Sporting Events

• 6 pm - Lowering of the flag in the Main Square

Thursday, September 14th
182nd Anniversary of the Federalization of Chiapas & Mexican Charreria Day

• 8 am - Raising of the flag to full mast in the Main Square

• 11 am - Traditional Charro Parade starting on Lázaro Cárdenas, then following Ignacio L. Vallarta, Morelos and Díaz Ordaz to México Ave.

• 6 pm - Lowering of the flag and a Municipal Band concert in the Main Square

• 8 pm - "Chiapas is Mexico" Festival featuring the Xiutla Municipal Folk Group, Marimba, Singers & a Grand Fiesta!

Friday, September 15th
196th Anniversary of the "Grito de Independencia"

• 10 am - 152nd Anniversary of the Mexican National Anthem – performed in the Main Square

• 6 pm - Lowering of the flag in the Main Square

• 6:30 pm - Traditional Games and Competitions on the Malecon – Waiters’ Race, Burro Race, “Palo Encebado” Contest, Three-legged race, etc.

• 8:30 pm - Noche Mexicana, (Mexican Night) at the Los Arcos del Malecón with performance by the Xiutla Folkloric Group

• 9 pm - City Hall will receive the Torch of Independence, which will arrive from Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato

• 9:05 pm - Passing of the Torch with the effigy of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Father of the Republic of Mexico.

• 10:50 pm - Reading of the Act of Independence and Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s speech.

• 11 pm - El Grito Ceremony at City Hall, followed by the Mexican National Anthem and Fireworks

• 11:30 pm - Baile Popular [Public Street Dance] in the Main Square and on the Malecon

Saturday, September 16th
Día de la Independencia

• 8 am - Raising of the flag in the Main Square

• 8:30 am - Civic Ceremony in "Parque" Hidalgo

• 10 am - Desfile Militar Cívico (the traditionally Military Parade) along Ignacio L. Vallarta, Morelos and Paseo Díaz Ordaz to México Avenue

• 8 pm - Noche Mexicana, (Mexican Night) along the Malecon and at Los Arcos Amphitheater
