Out and About in Puerto Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usTwila Crawford - PVNN

Between attending seminars and art shows, enjoying food, food and more food, visiting with family and friends and discussing politics and people, there's always plenty to see, do, and talk about, when you're Out and About in Puerto Vallarta.

Our thoughts are with Puerto Vallarta business women Cassandra and Candace Shaw and their brother Bill concerning the loss of their parents within days of each other, following respective illnesses. William and Freda Shaw spent winters in Puerto Vallarta and had a profound interest in the arts and music. A private memorial service in B.C., Canada, was on May 25th.

The final two Wise Wo-men seminars of the season feature on June 11th - Attorney Maria O'Connor discussing "Legal Aspects of Buying and Selling Real Estate in Mexico," and on June 25th - Essence of Cuisine's Dolores Brittingham on "Gourmet Cooking with Shortcuts." For further information, email darla(at)seminarswithdarla.com.

Galeria Vertice Puerto Vallarta, Ignacio L. Vallarta 179, features artist Jaime Jose and others at 8 pm on Friday, June 6th. Earlier that evening, artist Pat Henry has her show in her studio at 6 pm at 183 Jacarandas (between Francisco Madero and Aquiles Serdan.)

We've enjoyed Restaurant Week dining with friends. We've also joined BanderasNews food writer and Puerto Vallarta restaurant reviewer, Gary Beck, a friend, too, taking in some restaurants.

Gary's Banderas Bay-area "Beck's Best" is constantly updated on the Internet. The guide can be purchased at Vallarta Botanical Gardens or fine restaurants. For further information, go to CafePress.com.

Gary is educated as a horticulturist, with expertise concerning African violets, and worked in flower hybridizing, selling wine and now writes dining reviews and articles for major publications.

You might want to dine sometime at Trio trying the zesty Parmesan and Mushroom Risotto with Barbecued Rabbit Loin; at Vista Grill - Salmon Roll in "Hoja Santa" with coconut curry sauce; at Archie's Wok - Coconut Fried Rice, a smooth Yellow Curry with pork, chicken or tofu; and at Cafe des Artistes - Fried Goat Cheese Salad with pumpkin seeds, pear, vegetarian bacon, almonds and pecans, Chicken stuffed with pine nuts, humus and caramelized onions, and Copa le Rouge, a sorbet you undoubtedly have never experienced that will take you to heaven.

Coconuts Restaurant has closed, Mama Dolores' restaurant has been sold, and while walking on the Malecón, it appears apartments are going in the former Tequila's site. What a location! The terrace features Restauranti La Destilerca, serving Mexican food. The restaurants also are in Cancun and Mexico City. Hours are 8 am - Midnight. Tel: 222-3159.

If stores and restaurants aren't closing on Basilio Badillo, they are shifting around or moving to other sites. A good number of restaurants always close in the summer, usually never to be seen again.

Treehouse/Miguelito's owner Lori Lorenzen welcomes Enrique from Machis as manager for the summer while she is in the US. Music groups will perform during the summer, including Pacific Rock Co. on Thursday and Friday nights. After a couple of weeks of refurbishing, a big party was thrown to ease into the summer. Rocker Chris Kenny livened up the place.

The Mango Trio will be playing on Thursdays in Bucerias from 7-10 pm at Adriatio's Restaurant, 43 Lazaro Cardenas. Tel: (329) 298-6038.

TeatroLimon restaurant, and owner Bruce is so the chef of the moment, that not only does the Tribune receive letters, but I received fan mail for writing about this popular place.

We watched the spectacular national fireworks competition at the Vallarta sports facility from our terrace. Hope you had fun!

Cultural historian Tom Colvin, in town briefly, is delivering a lecture in June at the Fifth International Congress on Maritime History in Greenwich, UK. He also is preparing an academic article. Bet this musician, as well, doesn't stay away from his harmonica for long.

Darla Fowler (founder of Wise Wo-men) threw a lovely birthday party for her husband, Ernie, at their beautiful Marina Vallarta home. Neighbor Adilaide Blomfeld and houseboat friends, Dick and Ricki Williams, joined many other Banderas Bay area friends in the celebration.

Some persons are talking about all of the bananas and mangos in their yards. Lucky are neighbors and friends who are recipients.

The gentle rain may help some of us with our sore throats and coughs from the smoke from the mountain fires during the dryness before the rains.

So what do you think? The US election campaigns show ageism, racism and sexism are alive and well - as elsewhere. It is startling to me concerning ageism. We have many vital older residents here, to 100 years of age and beyond, contributing so much here and elsewhere in the world.

Along with many sites on the Internet, The New York Times is running articles about the drug violence around the country here in Mexico. Then there have been some widedly-reported shark attacks on Mexico's Pacific Coast. Also, seems everyone here is talking about crime of various sorts that is occurring in Vallarta as the town moves to a city, along with the U.S. economic issues trickling down. Doesn't seem to me, we should bury our heads in the sand here or make up all kinds of excuses about it.

As a former U.S. urban dweller, seems to me we should be informed and always stay very alert. More importantly, as our readers, what do you think?

Author of Intentional Living, psychologist Linda Abbott Trapp, was on Montreal/Toronto talk radio at 1 am recently discussing anger, jealousy and guilt. If you couldn't sleep, that probably woke you up! Hope some were able to sleep better afterwards.
