Kaiser Maximilian's Greek Summer Specials

In addition to their classic Austrian fare, Kaiser Maximilian will be serving a special menu featuring dishes from Greece through August 30.

Puerto Vallarta - I was to go to dinner with a friend at Kaiser Maximilian, Olas Altas 380-B, tel. (322) 223-0760. When medical emergencies came up for my dining partner, I decided to dine alone as I did in my business travel days, enjoying the Greek summer specials at the restaurant.

An out-of-the-way table was perfect for quiet and note-taking. The waiters couldn't have been more gracious, and owner Andreas Rupprechter stopped by several times to talk. He has lived here more than 30 years, so he provides interesting conversation. His wife, Cecilia, also stopped by to say hello. She has the boutique Etnica nearby.

A wine from Chile, Chardonay Austral, is dry and was good with hot breads before a Greek salad, very fresh, of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives and feta cheese was served.

Appetizers that I often order, maybe a couple, can make a meal. Perhaps I can try them another time - Spanakoptta y Tiropita, phyllo dough with spinach and cheese, and an eggplant roll with fried zucchini.

The waiter recommended the Moussaka as an entree. This is eggplant and ground beef with bechamel sauce. The sauce was smooth and creamy over the entree that was highly-seasoned. Very good.

I was full. But... Andreas brought over baklava of phyllo pastry with nuts and honey. Somehow it was actually light. I carried most of it home and snack on it bit by bit.

Andreas didn't stop there. He brought over an after-dinner drink called Agavero, with Dahiana and Tequila. It supposedly is an aphrodisiac. I sipped only a little as I wanted to get home quickly and safely!

The restaurant is lovely - in white decor. The setting and food usually are Austrian. That food is known as excellent at this establishment named after Austrian Archduke Maximilian Joseph von Habsburg, Emperor of Mexico.

And don't forget. In September, Kaiser Maximilian celebrates the national dish of Mexico - Chiles en Nogada. Don't miss it!
