Out and About in Puerto Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usTwila Crawford - PVNN

Seems everyone is gearing up for high season. With a number of restaurants and stores reopening and some of our winter residents returning, there are plenty of people to see and things to do while you're Out and About in Puerto Vallarta.

It is so wonderful to see returning persons to the Vallarta area. I was fortunate to be in a gathering of these persons sharing news of families, activities and unfortunately current financial woes. This week many restaurants and stores are reopened. Enjoy!

Two previously popular shows are scheduled for the opening of this Santa Barbara Theater season. "Fever," Mikki Prost's lively musical show opens November 11, continuing every Tuesday. "Always, Patsy Cline," with Sandi Lee and Mikki, opens November 13, continuing on Thursdays.

Cassandra Shaw's jewelry and accessories store is open at Basilio Badillo 267. Found when sprucing up were marble floors underneath the top flooring. Cassandra has a large assortment of new jewelry designs - natural stone rings, antique bronze pieces with silver, carved jade faces influenced by the Olmec civilization that are beautifully encased by sterling silver. Just a gorgeous store.

Don Eastcott has closed the current No Name Cafe on the Malecon. He said it was doing well, and he "is doing a new project in Nuevo Vallarta in the spring." He anticipates he will open another No Name Cafe in Vallarta by December.

I smiled the other day when macho drivers hit the speed bump at Basilio Badillo and Constitution... and got startled looks on their faces. After near-death escapes, speed bumps at every corner around town would be fine with me!

A friend and I wandered around Liverpool the other day to take a rest from her music and my writing. Mexkode, with owner Adriana Ibarra Guerra, is a beautiful fun store with gorgeous dresses, scarves, purses and jewelry. Have you been to Chili's there that gives diners an opportunity to look right out to the cruise ships?

Be sure to pick up a publication at the Tourist Office featuring an "Exposicion Fotografica" by Javier Perez, one of Puerto Vallarta's premier photographers. He photographs for the Tribuna, and has many other credentials and awards.

Mexican lawmakers, responding to public anger about kidnappings and drug killings, are considering reinstating the death penalty. Only three years ago, the death penalty was abolished. Organized crime has been blamed for more than 3,000 deaths so far this year in Mexico.

Spanish tenor Placido Domingo sang songs in the Maya language at a concert of 5,000 persons last weekend among pre-Hispanic pyramids in Chichen Itza in southeastern Mexico. Caution was taken, officials say, to avoid damaging the more than 1,500-year-old site, The tenor is featured in a cover article in the fall AARP Segunda Juventud.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon, battling drug cartels, is seeking to decriminalize possession of small amounts of street drugs. The proposal would cover cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, opium and marijuana. It is expected Washington (U.S.), as usual, will object. Reuters reports that "Drug use is less common among young people in Mexico than in the United States or Europe. But consumption is creeping up with the growth of the middle class and as tighter border controls mean more cocaine stays in the country."

The Guadalajara Reporter and The News of Mexico City last week were filled with everything from break-ins to killings to murder of a mayor in small towns in Mexico. At this particular period of time, issues here in Vallarta are not unusual to the rest of the country. Stay well-informed and aware.

I was in heaven grocery shopping at Mega. I spotted both Rice Krispies and Dr. Pepper. Carried out what I could handle.

The film Beverly Hills Chihuahua apparently is doing well at the box office. It was filmed here and in other parts of Mexico.

Congratulations to Heather Wilson who now is editor of the Tribune. She is a journalism-pro and has been associated with fine publications in Vallarta and in Canada. We wish her well.
