Out and About in Puerto Vallarta

PromoVision's Ray Dion took an Easter morning walk on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta from Playa Los Muertos to the Malecon and captured the sights along the way for this photo gallery.
Each Easter and Passover season, this is the way it goes in my neighborhood - a rooftop dog of the neighbor's guests barks incessantly for days, a rooster that appeared with his crowing seems to go quiet on Easter Day... probably a dinner item, partying goes on throughout the night for days, and finally, on Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross move by below our terrace.

Easter is always glorious - this year I visited Christ Church by the Sea, Blvd. Fco. Medina 7936, where the attendees worship under a palapa. The woods used and the furnishings are beautiful with a lovely outside garden. Go to ChristChurchByTheSea.org.

Following Semana Santa here, the Banderas Bay area will become more quiet for its residents. I love it all - the noise, the quiet. I now am ready for the rains and the stunning lightning displays of summer. How about you?

The past two programs of Wise Wo-men, founded by Darla Fowler, were outstanding. Mexican Financials were explored with us by Fernando Valerio, a financial adviser. As most of us can guess, Fernando pointed out, that "We live here in Puerto Vallarta four times as well as life is lived in other parts of Mexico." He provided us with many statistics. If you would like some of that information, please talk with him through Scotia bank. He is well-educated and well-informed.

Because of the world credit crisis, all Mexican banks have been sold to U.S. and European banks. The top material resources in Mexico, as pointed out by Fernando, are oil, tourism, money transfers, corporations and exports. Tourism especially is being touted by the Mexican government. We came away from the meeting with a sense of how many Mexicans think, how the government operates in Mexico, and understanding better perhaps some of our "whys."

In another program, Lisa and John Ozzello of Bahía Home Care explained hospice care. They are leading the way to have such care in the Banderas Bay area. Fortunately, as Lisa explains, this community has a model from San Miguel that is working well. Lisa says such care is a "basic human rights issue." It is for Mexicans and expats. She hopes to have this be free care, which will involve considerable fund raising. Again, Lisa provided many statistics and much information that you may want to obtain from her.

There are obstacles to hospice care that Lisa is working to overcome concerning health care issues and issues around "respect for end of life wishes." John and Lisa, with years of experience and credentials in the health care and hospice fields, need help. They are establishing a board and need many volunteers. They hope to have the "hospice agency" by the end of the year, operating from Mismaloya to Sayulita. If you have met them and listened to them, you know they will make it happen. Their telephone number is (329) 298-6264. Also go to BahiaHomeCare.com.

Additionally, Lisa has been working on a pilot program here, a demonstration project, concerning Medicare. For further information, telephone her.

The last Wise Wo-men program of the season is with the ever popular speaker, attorney Maria O'Conner. She will discuss Legal Information on Real Estate in Mexico. The meeting is Wednesday, April 22, at 10 am at the International Friendship Club, Libertad and Miramar.

With the holidays and with many heading north, of course there have been gatherings and parties. One that is annual and so many rave about is the bash Sid Goodman and Keith May throw at their home on Easter Day. Wonderful persons.

At least two theaters are to be offering performances next season. Santa Barbara Theater, owned by Ann Marie Danimus, and CECATTUR Theater, through Pen and Ink of Ken and Karrie Sebryk. We here have been down this road before, and we'll see how it all goes.

Well-known author Linda Trapp, a Ph.D psychologist, who has conducted more than 3,000 seminars, has returned to California after writing three books here. Her bestseller was Ornamental Plants and Flowers of Tropical Mexico, along with her other books, Letter To My Granddaughters and Intentional Living. Despite requests, she was not invited by the leadership of Writer's Group to speak before she left town.

Linda had led the way for writers here to self-publish. She did it successfully, and probably could have left some good advice. She will continue her seminars in the U.S. and internationally. Linda, understandably, had been concerned about traveling, along with her husband, Bob, driving two packed cars and pulling a packed boat. Other than the usual car problems, they arrived safely in California.

Our thoughts are with former U.S. consular agent, Jenny McGill, who is recovering from a fall. She continues work on a book that may be out in the fall. Howard and Jenny are another set of wonderful persons here.

I always advise to be aware and alert in these economic times here. Well, for the first time I was scammed... by a female cashier at La Pizza Nostra on Olas Altas. It's the usual juggling of bills, coins and conversation. Her supervisor seemed to not question her behavior. I ended up with a not-intended very expensive takeout pizza. I was just too comfortable.

With economic situations here, please, along with me, be aware of scams, pickpockets and general crime. Doesn't mean we don't love living in the beauty here and with so many lovely persons in this town. The Vallarta government, fortunately, has taken more precautions with lighting and several call boxes.

Enjoy the International Fireworks Symposium this week!
