La Palapa, the first beach front restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, is celebrating the 50 year anniversary of its opening in 1959.
The World Tourism Day celebration on the main plaza was fun-filled, primarily a Mexican event. The finest restaurants in Vallarta served good-sized tastings for $10 pesos. A couple of pieces of tasty pizza were a meal. Other beautiful dishes were available.

Children learned the tastes of fine food. Amaranta Torre Alcala of El Sofa Cafe (223-8446) and Alma Aguilar of Yoga Vallarta (044-322-116-5809) sold incredible cookies, including gummy bear ones. Four of them slipped into my purse, after eating one on the spot.

The plaza was filled with persons listening to the community band and watching dancers. Thank you to Cherie Verber and Pam Alexandra from San Diego who invited me.

I stopped in at El Sofa Cafe, V. Carranza 333, to praise Amaranta for the cookies. Businessman and musician Miguel and former owner of Ambiance, Marcia Escontria, stopped by, and we all chatted in English and Spanish. We may be able to purchase items such as room scents from Marcia's home in November. Email: ambiancebymarcia(at)hotmail.com.

Dr. Fuentes, who heads the cleft palate surgery here, is recovering from hemorrhagic dengue in a Guadalajara hospital. It was a critical situation for some time.

Two Vancouver, Canada men who lived here were murdered. Douglas Kendall and Jeffry Ronald Ivans apparently were killed by narco traffickers of "Las Naciones Unides," a group of criminals in British Columbia, Canadian media have reported for a long time about this activity in Vancouver. Canadian and local Spanish-language newspapers have covered this murder in detail.

CONICA House is an organization that for 6 years has holistically supported children and young persons with cancer. Thanks to a donation from Don Salvador Ibarr Alvarez del Castillo of land, the first steps toward creating the first comprehensive care center for children with cancer, Campus CANICA, is underway, unique in Mexico. On November 15, persons will gather in solidarity at the arches on the Malecón in Vallarta.

The U.S. Consular Agency Vallarta, in conjunction with Community Service projects in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco and Riviera Nayarit, is sponsoring a monthly Network Breakfast, according to consular agent Kelly Trainor. All interested persons are welcome. A service project will be highlighted for persons to contribute to a designated "Bring A Thing."

The first Network Breakfast is at 9 am on Friday, October 16, at Hotel CasaMagna Marriott, La Estancia Restaurant, in Marina Vallarta. The CAIA Senior Citizen Home in Vallarta will benefit from the "Bring A Thing." Please respond with your attendance to roman.azuara(at)marriotthotels.com or by calling (322) 226-0000.

The annual Vallarta Art Walk opens Wednesday, October 28, from 6-10 pm. Some of the 16 participating galleries will be following a theme of Day of the Dead.

Vallarta musician/writer Tom Colvin, who lives at times in Manila, helped his friends and neighbors during the huge storm there. Tom performed blues music at a benefit and said it helped him tremendously. Tom reports he lost 15 years of research in the storm. He seemed upbeat as he still has materials for other research. That´s Tom. If you want to reach Tom, email him at phmx(at)yahoo.com.

I worked this past week with Amelia Sanchez Golmenares at Sterling on Francisco Medina Asencio. She is a beautiful person - so friendly and caring. At Banorte in the Malecón area, another friendly and helpful person is Maria Luisa Andrade Tirado.

Do you know the FedEx office is at Fco. Medina Asencio 1841 in Plaza Santa Maria? Tel: 225-9800.

Congratulations to La Palapa as the restaurant celebrates 50 years, opening in 1959. It was the first beach front restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. Imagine a time before the film, Night of the Iguana, a time before bridges were built over the Rio Cuale, and when one could experience the peace and tranquility of the undiscovered paradise on the south side.
