A bone density test (called a densitometry) determines whether you have osteoporosis or are at risk of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become more fragile and more likely to break.

An interesting note:

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than two million men (in the US) have osteoporosis. Nearly 12 million more have osteopenia, a precursor condition that commonly leads to full-fledged osteoporosis. Few doctors take the time to investigate bone loss in men. Men lose bone more slowly than women - and because they start out with more bone mass, it takes them longer to start getting fractures. But once a man reaches his mid-70's, his risk for getting osteoporosis is about the same as a woman's.

Men with osteoporosis often are diagnosed only when they suffer a low-impact fracture. This is when even a minor impact or movement - falling down or bumping into something - causes a bone to break. most fractures occur in the wrists or hips. Men over 60 with low weight and/or COPD should get a bone density test - as should anyone who has taken steroids for six months.

So, gentlemen, this is not just a "women's" disease!

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends bone density testing if:

• You're a woman age 65 or older

• You're a post menopausal woman under age 65 with one or more risk factors for osteoporosis

• You're a man age 70 or older

• You're a man between age 50 and 70 with one or more risk factors for osteoporosis

• You're older than age 50 and you've experienced a broken bone

• You're a post menopausal woman and you've stopped taking estrogen therapy or hormone therapy.

You will leave the clinic with your complete study in hand.

The clinics are filling up very, very quickly! We recommend that you make your appointment as soon as possible by emailing pamela(at)healthcareresourcespv.com or calling 044-322-107-7007.
