Businessman Sid Goodman is standing up concerning alleged police harassment, extortion and other incidents in Puerto Vallarta. Goodman met with Department of Tourism officials and a representative of the legal department. "I became frustrated that nothing seemed to be getting done regarding this problem and that those affected often did not report the incident due to fear of reprisal."

Goodman says, "None of the representatives attending had any idea of what was going on." He provided documentation to the senior official in the legal department responsible for police activity and expects to meet with him soon again. "Keeping silent is not a good option," Goodman says. His email: sidgoodman(at)pobox.com.

U.S. Consular Agent Kelly Trainor has issued the following statement: "I would be keen to be involved in heightening the awareness of the director of tourism, the director of public security and the judicial authorities so that the alleged harassment, extortion and other incidents that come to our attention are addressed, and perpetrators are punished in accordance with the law. I would encourage all American citizens who have fallen victim to such incidents to provide me with a short email report. Then I can present the information at my traditional bi-monthly meetings with the director of public security. Personal and private information will not be provided to the Mexican authorities. The email report should include the date of incident, specific or general location of incident, time of day, if there was a patrol number on the vehicle, how many officers were involved, were they communicating in English, and any other pertinent information." Kelly Trainor's email: amigakelly(at)prodigy.net.mx.
