The Sarcastic Gourmet: Faithful Freddy's Tucan
email this pageprint this pageemail usPVNN
October 25, 2010

Named 'Best Breakfast in Vallarta' in the 2010 Virtual Vallarta Readers' Choice Awards, Freddy's Tucan is located at Basilio Badillo #245 on the south side of Puerto Vallarta. Tel: (322) 223-0778
Twice a month on Sundays I have a physical need to visit Freddy's Tucan on Basilio Badillo Street. Not sure if it is the fabulous Eggs Benedict or the 2x1 Mimosas (prepared with fresh orange juice) that continue to lure me back.

An expert on Mimosas, having rated them in countless destinations, I think Freddy must grind a tad of the rind for an extra zing. The Maraschino cherry is a bonus and helps to curb my desire to order the incredible Black Forest Pancakes as an additional main course.

Consistency is my #1 criteria in choosing Vallarta restaurants because as the tourist population fluctuates and decreases during slow season, the best restaurateurs figure out the right formula to survive, yet others hang a sign stating Closed 'til October 22nd.

The staff is consistent and although I don't know the waiters by name, they all seem to know that 2 Mimosas should be in place soon after my butt hits the chair.

Freddy runs a tight ship and is ever present on Sundays accompanied by his family who seem to be glued to a current soccer game on the large plasma TV. I observed him scolding a waiter to button his shirt and tuck in his white cuffs that peeked out from the signature 'Freddy's Polo shirt.

Everyone must sport a hair net and this feature always takes me back to my 'Ballet Days' when "Eggs Benedict" could not ever be mentioned, let alone ordered. The menu is extensive and offers selections of Mexican and American choices and should accommodate the most demanding diners.

The Eggs Benedict are divine and are now served on newly acquired rectangular plates that logically fit the table for a more effective attack on the cuisine. I usually consume obnoxious amounts of the blackened salsa taquera and paired with the eggs, the flavor is indescribable.

I am a huge fan of Freddy's and give him a 5 fork rating in low season and a 3 in high season because there always is... a lineup.
