Puerto Vallarta's Aviana Beats International Competition

The Challenge: how to make the country’s best literacy tutoring group an interesting sell for donors, volunteers, and media. The Solution: Tell it like it is. And don’t sugar coat it.

Puerto Vallarta based strategic media firm Aviana Productions has been awarded a prestigious Aurora Award for its messaging film production on behalf of the educational nonprofit, Reading Partners.

Competing against entries from Russia, Denmark, Hong Kong and other parts of the world, the Reading Partners film was cited for its creativity, message effectiveness and technical quality.

Reading Partners, headquartered in Oakland, California, USA, is scaling nationwide, most recently to Washington, D.C., as it uses volunteer tutors to rapidly bring low income children up to reading levels at little cost to school districts struggling with crippling budget deficits.

For Aviana Productions, the Aurora Award comes after winning three 2010 national Aegis Awards for Film and Video Production.

"This is messaging, pure and simple," said Aviana principal Jon Duncanson. "We made a hard hitting show-and-tell film that the organization has already used to good effect both for fundraising and media awareness."

Aviana Productions and Reading Partners used the film in email communications to garner extensive media and television publicity in opening up the organization's push into Washington, D.C.

"This media piece is a key element during a pivotal moment in the adolescence of Reading Partners, as we are transitioning from a local friend into a national force," said Steve Dostart, Reading Partners board member and executive producer of the film.

The Aurora Awards is a international competition designed to recognize excellence in the film and video industries. It specifically targets products, programs and commercials that would not normally have the opportunity to compete on a national level, by focusing on non-national commercials, regional or special interest entertainment and corporate sponsored film and video.

Aviana Productions is a multimedia marketing and consulting company founded by Emmy Award winning television journalists Jon Duncanson and Sylvia Gomez based in Puerto Vallarta & the San Francisco Bay area.
