George Gershwin (1898-1937) was one of America's most influential music composers and pianists who worked in both classical and popular styles. Most of his songs were written to words written by his brother, Ira Gershwin. Some of his most well-known works are Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris and Porgy and Bess, which is considered to be one of the most important American operas of the 20th century. I Got Rhythm features beautiful harmonies, duets, solos, and mini vignettes of song and dance. Each song sparkles with pure Americana from the 20's and 30's. Come and take a step back in time as you enjoy this art-deco themed show starring Act II partner, Alfonso López, along with MaryJo Nelson, Sasha del Océano, Marsha Ward Ross, Alberto Ponce, and Andrew Sands. Gary Beck's Review of Dress Rehearsal "I was invited to view a dress and technical [tech] rehearsal of I Got Rhythm: A Musical Revue celebrating American composer, George Gershwin for their feedback and practice of the cast's songs and dance numbers. The full cast entered in couples arm in arm to "I Got Rhythm" A striking design of the show is that the famous songs are mashed into a stream of music. One song flows into the next and repeats. In this fashion, the audience members may hear several songs in a matter of minutes. "Strike Up The Band" was presented smoothly with energy Marsha climbed to the top of the staircase set and sang in gorgeous soprano "Summertime", a top Gershwin composition. The jazzy Southern blues song remains one of his best and Marsha gave a tour-de-force performance. In pieces, they rehearsed songs and medleys, calling for a stoppage when something is askew. "Nice Work If You Can Get", "It's Wonderful", "Embraceable You" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" were familiar songs practiced once, then again. Sitting in the audience, you realize how many long hours are devoted to designing a show and then implementing it in every single area until the director is satisfied, at least until the next rehearsal. Word was that a doubleheader on one day will be announced. Everyone involved here is dedicated to giving the best they can, even a slight turn to the right, or a clasp of the hand. Attention to detail is astounding. Maria walked over to remove a dangling thread from Marsha's gown. A special analysis was directed to lighting, especially where the highest singer was not lit very well. All singers perfected their notes and key of the song. George Gershwin was one of America's most influential music composers and pianists and is considered to be one of the most important American composers of the 20th century. This show is Americana from the '20s and '30s."
