Water Lily invades Banderas Bay beach in Nayarit https://www.milenio.com/estados/nayarit-bahia-banderas-invadida-lirio-acuatico SALVADOR ARELLANO At least half a ton of water lily was removed from the beach of Sayulita in the municipality of Bahía de Banderas , Nayarit , according to the Department of Clean Beaches of the commune. https://www.milenio.com/estados/nayarit-bahia-banderas-invadida-lirio-acuatico The authorities reported that due to the heavy rains that have been recorded in recent hours, the Sayulita beach , considered touristly as one of the best destinations in the world for surfing , dawned with green spots on the sand. https://www.milenio.com/estados/nayarit-bahia-banderas-invadida-lirio-acuatico The presence of the lily is a natural phenomenon that comes from the Estero de San Pancho. C omo result of the rains of recent weeks, the natural currents and waves carried them to the beaches of Sayulita , confirmed the authorities. Municipal services and the State Clean Beaches area pointed out that the water lily also contained a large amount of plastic waste , said the Head of Clean Beaches of Jesús Arreola municipality through a communiqué from the town hall. The water lily was removed from the beach by town hall staff through private, government vehicles and the support of surfers who were in the area. The city council reported that although the water lily was removed, work continues as stems and roots buried in the sand must be completely removed , which will take at least three days. --------- The appearance of water lily on the beaches of Sayulita - municipality of Bahía de Banderas - is controlled, said the head of the Department of Clean Beaches of the mayor's office, José de Jesús Arreola who stressed that on Wednesday about 90% of the plant could be collected and the rest, on Thursday, manually. He noted that the volume of rainfall in recent days, caused the lagoon of the town of San Pancho to exceed its reservoir limit and the currents will carry the lily that grows in the place, to the beaches of Sayulita, causing stagnation. “ It was something that by the rains accumulated in a lagoon of the town of San Pancho, it burst and went out to sea, and the currents diverted us (the lily) to the beaches of Sayulita, but there are already actions from six in tomorrow, we are cleaning, and at the same time, we continue to serve the tourist, ”he said . He pointed out that so far between 15 and 20 tons of the lily have been removed, with the support of trucks, flips and other vehicles, involving public servants, merchants and visitors who helped. He stressed that this situation is not comparable to the problem of sargassum in Quintana Roo beaches , because the amount is smaller and there are no major effects on aesthetics. “ Nothing to do (with Cancun) nothing to do with sargassum, this is minimal; the beach will be in optimal conditions to enjoy the beaches, it does not involve affectations or toxicity, it is only an aesthetic issue, it had already happened in this season and now the trawlers and the greater volume of rain hit us, ”he said. The water lily - a freshwater species - is taken to the site of a private individual in Sayulita, who lent the site to wait for the plant to dehydrate and return to the land. “ The most complicated task will be to eliminate stems and roots buried in the sand, which will take about three days of manual screening and separation of any trace of the plant, with the aim of returning the beach of the Magic Town to its usual state, from Terrazola to Los Muertos, ”he concluded.
