Prensa Latina

Conservative Felipe Calderon insisted a lead of 400,000 votes secured his victory in Mexico's presidential election, but his leftist rival dismissed the claim and questioned the count. (AFP/Luis Acosta) | Mexico - High hopes surround results Monday of the Sunday general elections in Mexico, and are capturing national media attention.
"Mexico on Tenterhooks" made Milenio daily´s front page by informing of the decision of the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) to release vote results after Wednesday, when the official ballot counting starts.
It also spotlights the self-proclamations as victors of opposition candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and pro-government Felipe Calderon, announced Sunday at midnight.
Likewise, IFE´s verdict and two big pictures of Lopez Obrador and Calderon hit La Jornada headlines.
The rest of the local press is printing similar articles as well as television and radio, which have widely covered the elections since yesterday.
Sunday´s poll drew a 60-percent turnout of 71.3 million registered voters, who besides the president defined the members of both chambers of congress, 128 senators and 500 deputies, four state governments, including that of the Federal District, and local authorities. |
