The 'ugly' women, donning frumpy black wigs, glasses and Mexican-style ponchos with the word 'Guadalajara' in tacky fluorescent green, handed out resumes and compact mirrors in Times Square.
A hundred actresses dressed up as ABC's version of ugly descended upon New York's key tourist spots Thursday to promote 'Ugly Betty,' the American take take on a hit Colombian TV series that has become popular throughout the world.

The 'ugly' women, donning frumpy black wigs, glasses and Mexican-style ponchos with the word 'Guadalajara' in tacky fluorescent green, handed out resumes and compact mirrors in Times Square. They also hit Grand Central Station, Times Square, Wall Street and Rockefeller Center to make their mark on the city that dictates American fashion.

'Ugly Betty,' produced by Salma Hayek, will premier Thursday night on ABC, a competitive time slot that has previously been dominated by hit series like 'Friends,' 'Seinfeld' and 'ER.'

In a plot inspired by the Colombian comedy series 'Yo soy Betty la Fea,' ('I'm Am Ugly Betty') actress America Ferrara will play Betty Suarez as she tries to fit into the fierce and frivolous world of the fashion-conscious.

Adaptations of the Colombian series have been broadcast by TV stations in Israel, India, Germany, Russia, Spain and other countries.
