Around Christmas, Mexicans can gain an average of more than six pounds.

Mexico City — The Mexican Institute of Social Security has said that Mexico could become the country with the highest population of obese people if preventive measures are not taken by 2018, Univision reports.

One of the causes cited is American fast food, which is fast replacing traditional staples of the Mexican diet—corn, beans and vegetables — as the meal of choice.

More than 70 million people in Mexico are overweight.

Another cause of the obesity epidemic may be the large fiestas Mexicans hold during the holidays.

Around Christmas, Mexicans can gain an average of more than six pounds, the report says.
