TV Azteca Gets Desperate
Emily Brookes - C21 Media go to original
Mexico's number two-rating channel TV Azteca has picked up the Spanish-language version of Desperate Housewives, Amas de Casas Desesperadas, from US Hispanic network Univision.
Disney Latin America has been producing the Univision series since last July, and it follows localised Latin American versions of the series in Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador.
These versions have been met with such success that The Mouse has plans to localise Grey's Anatomy and Brothers & Sisters for Colombia in the coming year.
The TV Azteca-Univision deal marks a trend for Mexican broadcasters picking up stateside Spanish content. In March, Univision's key competitor, NBC Universal-owned Telemundo, forged a package distribution agreement with Mexico's top-rating channel, Televisa.
According to US trade publisher Variety, Televisa was offered Amas de Casas Desesperadas as a first option but passed, owing in part to the ongoing rights dispute between the two networks. |
