| President Felipe Calderón hands over 72 new ambulances to IMSS and launches Third National Health Week. | | This means, President Felipe Calderón said, the start of a process that will reverse the trend of several years, so that we can really improve the institution.
He declared that by providing the IMSS with 72 new ambulances, "we are meeting citizens' demand for a much better equipped, more efficient Social Security Institute,” adding that by late 2008, with a total investment of over $317 million pesos, the institution will have acquired 700 new units, which will renew 47% of its fleet, to deal with emergencies and transfer patients quickly and safely.
“We know that the timely presence of an ambulance often means the difference between life and death for those that need to be dealt with," declared the president.
He added that from today onwards, in order to facilitate the provision of health services, all Mexicans will be entitled to one of the five new National Health Cards according to their age and gender and that there will be forms for children, teenagers, women, and senior citizens, both male and female.
He said that the advantages of the new Health Cards is that they are universal and will be able to unify Mexicans' medical history in order to maintain an integral record not only of their vaccinations but also of their treatment and doctor’s appointment, as well as facilitating the provision of health services according to each person's age and gender.
Together with the new National Health Cards, which will be available at the medical units of the National System and in Civil Registry offices for newborns, a technical guide will be handed out containing more detailed information on health care and prevention.
A propos of the Third National Health Week, which he formally inaugurated during this same event, President Calderón declared that the goal is to implement nearly 57 health actions, such as: Giving 8.5 million hepatitis, tetanus and polico vaccinations, as well as handing delivering deworming medicines, serum sachets to prevent dehydration from diarrhea and food and micronutrient supplements such as vitamins, minerals, iron and folic acid.
The president invited parents to take advantage of the Third Health Week to ensure that their children catch up on any missing vaccinations and “not to allow a preventable disease to ruin their children's promising future." |
