He said that in order to construct an integrated health system for all Mexicans, regardless of their economic, social or employment status, public institutions such as the IMSS and ISSSTE are rapidly being reinforced.
In an event attended by Secretary of Health José Ángel Córdova Villalobos and Secretary of Health for the Federal District Ahued Ortega, the President said that his government’s main goal is to achieve universal health coverage by the end of his administration.
"We are investing as never before in Mexicans’ health, particularly that of those most in need. Nowadays, over 80 million Mexicans have some type of affiliation to public health institutions, such as the Mexican Social Security Institute, the ISSSTE or the Popular Insurance Scheme," he explained.
President Felipe Calderón highlighted the implementation of Medical Insurance for a New Generation, which aims to close the medical care gap among the population. He reported that so far, 1,700,000 children have been registered as the beneficiaries of this medical insurance scheme.
The Popular Insurance has also been consolidated, since its budget has been tripled from $16 billion pesos in 2006 to $48 billion pesos in 2009, enabling the number of families benefitting from this to rise from 5 million at the beginning of his administration to the current figure of 10 million.
Lastly, President Felipe Calderón said that his government has given an unprecedented boost to the national hospital infrastructure, as a result of which this year, approximately seven billion pesos will be allocated for building new hospitals and health centers.
"We are also working very hard to prevent diseases, since we know that every peso spent on health prevention means a savings of several dozen pesos in health treatment," he explained. |
