Mexico City Reduces Alert to ‘Green’ as Flu Abates
Jens Erik Gould & Crayton Harrison - Bloomberg go to original
Mexico City lowered its health alert level to “green” from “yellow,” paving the way for a resumption of regular economic activities following the swine flu outbreak.
The pace of new flu cases is falling quickly, with the last confirmed case occurring seven days ago, the capital city’s government said today in a statement.
Mexico City is returning to normal after the government reopened schools, restaurants and theaters it shut to contain the spread of the virus, which has killed 75 people in the country. The occupancy rate at the city’s hotels has climbed to 22 percent from 5 percent when the alert was at its peak, Mayor Marcelo Ebrard told reporters today.
The flu cost the city as much as 0.3 percent of its gross domestic product, with the tourism industry hit the hardest, Ebrard said. Mexico City has had more H1N1 swine flu cases than any other region in the country, Mexico’s Health Ministry said yesterday.
The outbreak has affected more than 10,000 people worldwide. The World Health Organization’s flu preparedness alert is at phase 5, meaning a pandemic is imminent.
