Mexico Health Secretary Press Conference - Wednesday, May 13
Mexico City - The Health Secretary gave a press conference Wednesday to update the daily information on the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak in Mexico.

Dr. Córdova gave the figures for confirmed cases and deaths from the virus, which total 2,446 confirmed cases to date, of which 60 deaths have been recorded, meaning that the downward trend has continued.

The Health Secretary remarked that 89% of the municipalities in the country have no confirmed cases of Influenza A(H1N1), as a result of which he urged the population to fully resume its activities without abandoning its prevention activities.

Dr. Córdova stated that tourist resorts pose no risk to tourists, since although there have been crowds, there has been no significant increase in the number of confirmed cases.

Lastly, the Health Secretary said that economic activity must be fully resumed and that the health measures recommended will enable this to take place normally.

Dr. Stefano Bertozzi, a researcher at the National Public Health Institute, said that mathematical models have been used with the figures of confirmed and reported cases, showing that the downward trend has continued.

Dr. Bertozzi said that the social distancing measures for the case of Influenza A (H1N1) as well as the way the cases were treated was effective, since after the outbreak peaked, there was a sharp drop in the number of cases and the mortality index.

Lastly, Miguel Ángel Toscano, COFEPRIS Commissioner, reported on the results of the health surveillance carried out by the Institution regarding both advertising and pharmacies. He said that since April 24, the Commission has increased its monitoring of radio, television, the printed media and the Internet in order to locate deceptive advertising.

Miguel Toscano remarked that 36 orders to suspend advertising have been issued and that in certain cases, activities have been suspended and fake products withdrawn.

Companise that have been sanctioned include: Bisonova, Inhouse Medical Services, Shango, Instituto de Medicina Tradicional, and certain sellers offering their products through MercadoLibre.com.mx.

He told the Commissioner that a total of 9,190 visits have been paid to 28 states, where 10 products were seized and the activities of one establishment were suspended.

He added that PROFECTO has made 897 verification visits, focusing on the price of medicine, ensuring that offers are respected and checking that the information provided does not lead consumers to make mistakes.

Finally, he reported on the five recommendations established by COFEPRIS regarding Influenza A (H1N1):

• Do not take medicine without a prescription
• Do not purchase medication or food supplements on the Internet except from reliable sellers
• Do not treat yourself at home if symptoms appear
• Do not purchase any fumigation or ozone system to combat the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak, since these are ineffective.
• Call 01800-033 5050 or visit www.cofepris.gob.mx to file any health-related complaints.
