"In the event of a further outbreak, all nations should form a common front to effectively combat it."
- President Felipe Calderón
President Felipe Calderón gave the World Health Organization (WHO) the strain of the A/H1N1 flu virus to help create an effective vaccination against this disease, which will also help other countries' populations, particularly those with less economic capacity to develop their own health resources.

“Mexico is convinced that the Virus A/H1N1 vaccination should be a global public asset, whose formula is available to all countries and for the whole population and should be available to be produced and obviously used. Hence our interest in its being developed by the World Health Organization Network," he said.

In the presence of Dr. Philippe Lamy, WHO/PAHO Representative in Mexico, the President said that the information given to this organization includes statistical data on the patients, treatments and their location.

At the Esplanade leading to the Monument of Francisco I. Madero, at Los Pinos, the President remarked that this collaboration shows Mexico’s conviction and commitment to international cooperation and well-being.

“Today we confirm this commitment by donating this material which is essential for finding about more about this virus, its infectiousness, duration, behavior and molecular characteristics. This material is crucial for developing a vaccine for the virus, as well as increasingly effective medicine for dealing with it," he said.

Accompanied by Health Secretary José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, the Mexican president repeated the transparency with which Mexico responded to the outbreak of the new flu virus to warn the world of its existence and behavior.

“And we have said that Mexico's responsible, transparent action has been crucial in supervising and mitigating the spread of this disease. Why? Because thanks to the fact that the world was informed in a timely fashion, other countries have had the time and opportunity to cope with this virus and to prevent it from spreading among the population," he said.

Addressing the country's medical and scientific community, President Calderón acknowledged that fighting this pandemic is a global challenge that requires the cooperation of all nations, adding that Mexico has already done its part by acting responsibly.

He said that Mexico's information, transparency and experience have enabled it to act more quickly, accurately and effectively towards other nations to prevent them from having an epidemic.

“The lesson is clear: in the event of the emergence of another virus, as specialists have predicted for decades, all nations should form a common front that will boost the country's efforts in the areas where it has the heaviest outbreaks to combat them effectively. This is the only way we will be able to guarantee mankind's health security," he said.

The President thanked the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador for repealing the measures they took towards Mexico and Mexicans as a result of the flu outbreak and thanked the countries that never took them.

“Mexico is keeping its doors open, together with its airports and ports, with safe, preventive measures that have been scrupulously adopted by the population and invites the world's populations to visit our country's wonders," he said.
