"The vaccination is safe, the vaccination does not cause any harm and on the contrary, can help us all prevent a disease which, although under control, has claimed several lives. It is a disease that must be taken seriously. It is a disease that must be prevented,” he said.
Accompanied by Dr. Philippe Lamy, Mexican Representative of the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization, as well as Federal Health Secretary, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, the President said that this is a specific action for continuing to cope with the virus.
He said that the aim is for the vaccination to be given to 30 million Mexicans as from today and that 12 million doses are available this month. He said that the vaccination will be given at the nearly 2,500 Vaccination Centers installed throughout the country and in the case of isolated areas, will be applied by Health Caravans and Mobile Units in the IMSS Oportunidades Program.
During the event, in which President Calderón and wife Margarita Zavala applied the A/H1N1 flu vaccination, he highlighted Mexicans' unity during the flu virus outbreak and urged them to continue with the preventive measures and visit the doctor at the first sign of any symptoms.
“We have had the vaccination today to be able to express this confidence and ensure people that the vaccination is safe and that the vaccination is useful for fighting A/H1N1 flu," he said.
Addressing an audience of medical personnel, artists and members of civil society, the Mexican President stressed his government's commitment to health, adding that Mexicans resources will be assigned to producing more vaccinations, clinics, hospitals, laboratories and medical equipment.
The President urged Mexicans to support Haiti, thereby confirming Mexico's vocation as a country that sympathizes with that country's pain.
“We repeat our call to support Haitians with what they need. We continue and I urge you to continue collaborating with Haiti, which has suffered a great deal as a county, particularly so because of the scale of this tragedy," he said. |
