The Good Life Diet?

While at a dinner party last week, a friend dropped by our table to say hello and proceeded to question me about a weigh loss program. Well, Dear Reader, are you finally ready to jump off the good life diet merry-go-round?

Have you had it with feeling awkward about your weight? What was happening in your life when you decided to add extra pounds or starve yourself a bit? What about those extra pounds that slipped up on you after you decided to retire and enjoy the good life? What is the good life if not being able to enjoy all you have worked for with enthusiasm, well being and energy?

Many of my patients come in with the desire to control their weight. They want to believe that by some magic power I will be able to apply a few well placed acupuncture needles and voila! - they will be thin or add a few curves.

Acupuncture can help with the feeling of hunger, and elimination of fats held in the organs. It can also stimulate the glandular system to help regulate body fat. However, there is a connection in weight gain or loss with self image and underlying unidentified emotions. I find that the need to be protected, the feeling of being out of control of your life and abandonment issues play a large part in maintaining optimum weight. And of course, living the good life... which may mean overeating of high caloric foods, wine, alcoholic drinks, desserts and general abundance at the table. In all cases, there is a misconception of what we are feeding, is it our bodies, emotions or desires?

Nobody is born with a misconceived relationship with food. In fact, babies are very good at regulating their food intake; guided by instincts they know when to eat and when they've had enough. However, as we develop, our perceptions of food, our bodies, our emotions can become warped by countless advertising messages, peer pressure, culture and sometimes, even by our parents or loved ones good intentions.

You can effectively reprogram and reconnect with the body and emotional intelligence you were born with weather you are overweight, or underweight.

Consider...

• Zero in on the sources of your cravings and eating habits.

• Explore your feelings about food and experiment with tiny but conscience changes.

• Don't deny yourself, be aware of what you really want..a second helping or will a bite do? Share portions, there is usually enough for two anyway when you add a salad... and it's fun and promotes intimacy... that's a good thing.

• Desserts are always shared... unless you are an only child and hate sharing... if this is the case, leave half on the plate, this is a show of pure will power that will impress your friends.

• Do an activity you really love to do, like dance, swimming, walking, stand while painting, take your sketching pad on walks, always take the stairs. Anything you do extra then what you are doing now is a plus, and believe it or not... gives you more energy.

• Rigid meal plans, low-fat recipes, carb counters work for some people, the point is to achieve a healthy, balanced perception and relationship with food.

• Take a long look at your body (this can be scary) use your emotional intelligence to get in touch with what you are really feeling and what your body is asking for.

• Start with a small changes that you are comfortable with and soon those small changes spill over to visible manifestations.
