First lady Marta Sahagun lashed back at a congressional committee that demanded a criminal investigation into allegations that her two sons flew presidential jets to a government house to seal illegal real estate deals totaling more than US$30 million (24 million). (AP/Mario Armas) | Mexico City, July 28 - Marta Sahagun declared that congressman Jesus Gonzalez Schmall is "a liar and a coward, because his remarks about her have only been lies and speculation. She reminded the congressman that "his immunity has limits" and she will wait for him to confirm his accusations when he is out of office."
She demanded that the legislator present proof of his declarations about alleged traffic of influence by her sons, Manuel and Jorge Alberto Bribiesca Sahagun, or else apologize.
"Not satisfied with damaging the image and honor of my sons, now he has aimed his dirty words at me. Mr. Gonzalez Schmall, your immunity has limits. I will wait for your immunity to end," she said.
In a message she gave in the Venustiano Carranza Room at the Official Residence of Los Pinos, Marta Sahagun made the congressman from the Convergencia Party responsible for any physical or moral harm that her children or any member of her family might suffer.
The wife of President Vicente Fox said she would continue to defend the good name of her family within the framework of the law and until the last consequences. "Gonzalez Schmall lies because he hides behind anonymous testimony. His behavior has been cowardly in a regrettable unworthy process brought about by a handful of legislators."
This was Sahagun's response to statements by Jesus Gonzalez, Chairman of the Congressional Investigative Committee of business carried out by Construcciones Prácticas, a company linked to her sons, the Bribiesca Sahagun brothers Manuel and Jorge Alberto, and now with her.
Marta Sahagun said that the congressman thinks that he is protected by immunity and can go around acting with impunity and without the slightest sense of responsibility and honesty. "The lion thinks everyone else is just like him", she told him.
She asserted that if anyone has a lot of explaining to do about traffic of influence, it is Gonzalez Schmall himself, who has been judge and jury in the case of the Bribiesca Sahagun brothers.
She added that after a year of investigations, they have not been able to prove anything "because there is nothing there," so she trusts that the proper institutions will uncover the truth about who is who.
She reiterated that the process followed by the Special Congressional Committee was unconstitutional and illegal, and therefore as a citizen, she demands that the acts committed by this committee and by Gonzalez Schmall observe the law. Mexico City, July 29 - Marta Sahagun considers that the presentation of the report drafted by the Special Congressional Committee that investigated Construcciones Prácticas - linked to her sons, the Bribiesca Sahagun brothers, concludes an unconstitutional process.
Interviewed after launching a call for nominations for the 2006 National Volunteer Prize, the wife of President Vicente Fox repeated her position about the case involving her boys Manuel and Jorge Alberto Bribiesca Sahagun.
"It is simply a process that has concluded, a process, as I have said, that has been unconstitutional from the start. They are not going to find anything where there is nothing, so if the congressmen finished their work according to them, that's fine," she said.
Asked about the possibility that the Committee report that will be handed over to Congress shortly will be endorsed over to the next congress, she remarked that that is up to congress.
About what she expects from the congressmen coming into office next September, Sahagun said, "I hope that do a great job for the country, that is what I hope for; it is what I want for my country, that they do a great job for the country."
Regarding the call for nominations for the 2006 National Volunteer Prize, she said that the goal is to recognize outstanding volunteers and to call on society for increasingly more hands joined in favor of the needy.
In the Adolfo Lopez Mateos Room at the Official Residence of Los Pinos, she added that everyone should be willing to come together to build a great, strong nation of solidarity.
"In today's Mexico, you can perceive more clearly what can be accomplished when the most appreciated values such as the spirit of solidarity, generosity and service become actions that are translated into equal opportunities," she added.
