Carnival Cruise Lines to Begin Year-Round Trips from San Diego

"The addition of year-round home-ported cruise service really puts San Diego on the cruising map."
- Port Commissioner Robert "Rocky" Spane
Carnival Cruise Lines will begin year-round trips to ports in Baja, Mexico, from San Diego starting in June, company officials announced Thursday.

The 2,052-passenger ship Elation will be the first ship to operate out of San Diego on a year-round basis, with 78 trips scheduled annually, according to Carnival Cruise Lines. Service is scheduled to begin June 2.

The ship will depart from San Diego on Thursdays on four-day cruises to Cabo San Lucas and on Mondays and Saturdays on five-day trips to Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, on a rotating schedule.

The cruise line's ship Spirit has provided seasonal eight-day Mexican Riviera voyages from San Diego since 2004.

Mayor Jerry Sanders and Port of San Diego officials marked the expanded cruise ship service at a waterfront event this morning.

"The addition of year-round home-ported cruise service really puts San Diego on the cruising map," said Port Commissioner Robert "Rocky" Spane. "This decision by Carnival Cruise lines is great for Carnival's business and great for the region's economic progress."

The 855-foot-long Elation weighs 70,000 tons and houses a health club, 12 lounges and bars, a jogging track, Internet cafe, three swimming pools, waterslide and three restaurants.
