Where Are This Year's Holiday Hotspots?
email this pageprint this pageemail usTravelwire

Ready or not, here it comes. And needless to say, few of us are ever ready.

Old Man Winter has blown into town in a big way with wind-chilling temperatures and snow in the forecast.

It's expected every December, but somehow we always seem to get taken by surprise. Which is why some people may be literally left in the cold if they haven't booked their Christmas holiday getaway yet.

Space fills up fast and if you're planning to escape the cold, it's nearly too late to find a good deal for the weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year's.

"We just did a recent survey. About half of all Canadians are planning to do some sort of trip over the holiday period," explains Sean Shannon of Expedia.ca.

Where are the most popular places to spot a Canadian snowbird? Florida is the number one destination as usual. But it's not the only one.

"Jamaica's looking to do very, very well," Shannon outlines. "Dominican Republic and I'll call all of Europe as one big destination."

A combination of hurricanes and a high profile murder involving a Canadian couple has left Mexico declining in popularity. But the country isn't off the list yet and travel agents insist things are improving.

"The key markets - Cancun, Mayan Riviera, Puerto Vallarta - are really incident-free," swears Shannon.

But wherever you're going he has one pointed piece of advice about when not to go there - December 23rd.

"That's the single highest travel day," he points out. "The earlier you could leave in advance of December 23rd, the better prices you're going to get. In some cases for an individual ticket you'll save $50, $100, maybe even $150 per ticket."

A lot of these destinations don't require a passport, just proper I.D. Still, you're better off bringing it along.

The U.S. will require all Canadians entering the country by plane to carry the official document by January 23rd. Land and sea crossing requirements kick in June 2009.
