Summer Fun for Families
email this pageprint this pageemail usBaltimoreSun.com

Memorial Day weekend launches the family vacation season. Here are a few deals to be enjoyed by parents and kids alike.

• Exploring dinosaur fossils by flashlight and sleeping under the big blue whale are just a couple of the highlights in the Night at the Museum program at the American Museum of Natural History in New York's Manhattan. This giant sleepover (400 attend at a time) - designed for families with children ages 8 to 12 - costs $79 a person and includes a cot and breakfast. Dates for August and the fall to be announced. Call 212-769-5570 or go to american-mnh.org.

• Amtrak's free companion travel offer allows a parent or guardian to travel free when accompanying a high school junior or senior on a college campus visit. Reservations must be made at least seven days prior to travel. The discount is not available on the Acela Express or Auto Train, and seats are subject to availability. Go to campusvisit.com/amtrak.

• New water attractions adorn resorts looking for ways to entertain families. At the Atlantis Paradise Island resort in the Bahamas, the new 63-acre Aquaventure water park has water slides, river rapids and a water roller coaster ride. But families will need a passport if they come by air. Travelers who book a summer vacation to Nassau/Paradise Island by June 15 and stay a minimum of two nights at a participating hotel can be reimbursed in full for the passport application and expediting fees for new U.S. passports (limit two rebates per room). The offer is valid for passports issued May 1-July 7. For details, go to nassaupara diseisland.com.

• A "lazy river" surrounds the new Oasis family complex - 21 casita rooms and two suites - at the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Guests can drift around on inner tubes, float boards or noodles. Family rates, July-September, are $375 per room per night, with 50 percent off a second room. Call 800-819-5053 or go to fourseasons.com.

• Many hotels are offering discounted rates and packages to attract families. At the Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort in Mexico, the Family Fun Summer Promotion, available July 1-Oct. 15, offers a kids' concierge service to help plan activities, cooking classes and kids' karaoke show. Rates start at $199 a night for a double room; children 12 and younger stay and eat (from the children's menu) free. Details at 800 445-8667 or go to hiltonloscabos.com.

• The Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska is celebrating its 90th anniversary, and the Denali Park Resorts are offering $90 room rates on specific dates throughout June, July and August. The offer is a 60 percent savings from standard rates. Details at 800-276-7234 or go to denaliparkresorts.com.
