San Francisco, CA - Last-minute cruise travel can be spontaneous, exciting or relaxing, and even inexpensive. That's particularly true during the summer months, when cruise lines are eager to fill empty staterooms and prices dip.

Regions for the best deals in the summer usually include itineraries in the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii and sometimes Alaska. With a little flexibility in the planning process, last-minute cruisers can get great rates on an all-inclusive getaway.

Here's a roundup of just a few of the deals available for late summer and fall through your travel agent, online travel services or directly from the cruise lines. When considering a cruise to the Caribbean and Mexico before the end of the hurricane season, be sure to ask your travel agent about trip insurance.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Mexico: Carnival is offering discounts on its three- and four-day cruises from Los Angeles to Baja, Mexico aboard the Paradise, with starting fares ranging from $299 to $459 per person on selected sailings between Aug. 24 and Oct. 12. The Carnival Spirit sails to Mexico, eight days roundtrip from San Diego, with fares beginning at $629 per person on Oct. 29.

Caribbean: The Carnival Triumph sails a seven-day cruise out of Miami, with prices as low as $529 per person for the Dec. 8 sailing. Carnival Valor, also doing a seven-day roundtrip to the Caribbean from Miami, has prices starting at $549 per person for sailings in the first half of December.
