Mexico City - Cruz Azul downed Pumas 3-0 to hand the reigning champions their second successive loss Sunday in the second round of the Mexican Apertura championship.

Paraguayan defender Dario Veron conceded an own goal in the 42nd minute before his countryman Christian Riveros extended the lead for Cruz Azul six minutes later. Former Derby County striker Emmanuel Villa sealed the win in the 86th, as the Blue Machine won their seventh straight match against the Pumas at estadio Olimpico universitario.

Pumas is still scoreless in the season.

Another big team in trouble is Chivas, who fell 3-1 to Tigres on Saturday for their second straight loss.

Francisco Fonseca opened the scoring in the fifth and Brazilian striker Itamar Batista scored goals in the 34th and 61st minutes for Tigres, who won in estadio Jalisco for the first time since September 2003.

Javier Hernandez scored on a cross from Alberto Medina in the 50th for a Chivas team that has allowed a season high seven goals in just two matches and are off to their worst start since 1973.

Chivas will have some time off to work on defense before playing again in Mexico. The team postponed their next match to play a friendly against Barcelona. Their next match in the Apertura will be on Aug. 15, against Queretaro.

After two rounds, Pachuca and Toluca lead the Mexican tournament with six points each after convincing wins over Queretaro and Jaguares, respectively.

Los Tuzos won 3-1 on Friday night. Marco Jimenez put Queretaro ahead in the 20th, but Juan Carlos Cacho in the 40th Marco Perez in the 76th and Edgar Benitez in the 80th turned things around for Pachuca.

On Saturday, Nestor Calderon scored twice as the Red Devils took down Jaguares 2-0.

In other scores it was: Monterrey 3, Atlas 0; America 1, Morelia 2; Santos 1, Ciudad Juarez 0.
