James Lepp finishes fourth in the Copa II De Las Americas.
In Puerto Vallarta, the El Tigre golf course at Paradise Village was host to the 72 hole Copa II De Las Americas tournament, which included golf pros from 13 different countries, and included men and women in this unique format.

In men’s play Canada’s Richard Scott and James Lepp shared second place after the first round, both shooting 68, as Colombia’s Oscar Alvarez shot a course best 65 to lead. Scott followed with a 69 leading Lepp by a stroke after 36 holes, as Alvarez ballooned to a 77. Argentina’s Victor Argonz took the lead after three rounds shooting a 66, following his 72 and 70, with Scott one behind with an even par 72.

The stage was set for Saturday’s final round and Canadian Scott came home with a final round 68 to win the tournament at 11 under par 277. Mexico’s Oscar Fraustro shot a 67 in the final round to finish two strokes behind the victor. Finishing third was Argonz whose final round 72 left him one behind the runner up. Mexico’s other entrant finished 12th, 15 strokes back. The two golfers from the U.S. were Mark Bemowski and Austin Eaton. They finished 13th and 14th in the field of 26.

As a country, the Canadians fared the best, with Scott winning and Lepp finishing fourth. Argentina was second best, their players finishing third and fifth. Mexico was second and twelfth and Colombia was sixth and ninth. Coming in last was Panama’s Roberto Duran; (sounds strange), shooting 337, 60 strokes behind the winner. Congratulations to Richard Scott, taking home the top prize on the men’s division.

Mexico’s Violeta Retamoza shot an even par 72 for each of the four rounds, a model of consistency, winning the women’s championship by two strokes. Canada’s Laura Matthews finished second, followed by two Colombian golfers. Mexico’s other entrant; Alejandra Llaneza finished sixth, 11 strokes behind the leader. The best the U.S, could do was seventh, with Corey Weworski 18 strokes behind.

The men’s team honors went to Canada, with Scott and Lepp shooting a total of 559, five strokes better than Argentina. Team Mexico finished third, another seven strokes back, and Colombia placed fourth in the event. The Colombian women’s team came from behind to catch Mexico, both finishing with 587. Finishing third was Canada, ten strokes behind the two and placing fourth was Argentina, eleven more back.

The U.S. women finished fifth, but were never in the hunt. In the mixed format which included total scores of all four members of each country, Canada nipped Mexico by a slim two stroke margin, shooting 1156. Colombia was a very close third, five strokes behind Mexico and Argentina finished fourth, nine shots further back The U.S. team finished a distant fifth.

Congratulations to Paradise Village and to El Tigre, for giving us yet another world class event. Every stroke counted for every player and there were five winners, two in individual play, two in doubles and the last for the four combined.
