| The 2004 Nations Cup was a brilliant one for Mexico’s Alejandro Quiroz and Pablo Del Olmo. | For more than twenty national teams coming from Latin America, Europe and other parts of the world, the road to the 2005 World Cup starts October 5-8 at the IV Paradise Village Nations Cup in Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico.
The magnificent El Tigre Country Club golf course, as well as the Paradise Village hotel will serve as the official venues for the four-day qualifier. Presented by the Association of Hotels and Motels of Bahia de Banderas, Vallarta-Nayarit, the event will be conducted by the Tour de las Americas on behalf of the International Federation of PGA Tours.
This time around the teams will compete for three spots at the 2005 World Cup, to be played in Algarve, Portugal, November 17-20 with a minimum purse of U.S. $4 million. Besides securing their share of the purse, the top three teams at this event will have the opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the world.
The 72-hole tournament will have the same format as the World Cup, fourball the first and third days, and alternate shots the second and final days of competition.
“The 2005 Paradise Village Nations Cup makes our relationship with the International Federation of PGA Tours and the European Tour stronger. They have trusted us with the Nations Cup for four years and that’s a great sign. It moves us closer to becoming members of the Federation in order to provide more benefits to the TLA members,” said the Tour de las Americas’ Commissioner Henrique Lavie as he made the qualifying tournament’s official announcement.
El Tigre, a challenging course opened in March 2002, is a Robert Von Hagge design. It is a 7,239-yard par 72 that features several scenic holes with ponds and creeks, as well as numerous sand traps that are typical of Von Hagge.
“We are proud to strengthen our business relationship with Paradise Village's magnificent complex. We are delighted to return to El Tigre CC, which in my opinion is one of the top golf courses in Latin America,” added Lavie. “Our players feel very fortunate to compete at El Tigre, enjoy the Paradise Village Hotel facilities and visit Nuevo Vallarta-Nayarit, which is one of the top tourist destinations in our continent and the second most important destination in Mexico. On behalf of the TLA I would like to thank the Association of Hotels and Motels of Bahia de Banderas as well as Vallarta-Nayarit’s Visitor’s Bureau for supporting the 2005 Paradise Village Nations Cup”.
“It is an honor and a privilege for Paradise Village Group and El Tigre Country Club to host an event of this magnitude,” said Mr. Graziano Sovernigo, President of the Group. “I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to invite golf fans to come and visit the Vallarta-Nayarit area. Great weather, kind people, beautiful natural surroundings and a splendid golf course will make you feel as if you are in paradise”.
Jesus Carmona, Golf Director at El Tigre Country Club, added: “To be part of such a prestigious event for the fourth consecutive year is a great honor. Golf wise, a tournament like this brings class and distinction to El Tigre CC and the Paradise Village Hotel. I am absolutely sure that the 2005 Paradise Village Nations Cup will be a great success. It would be even better than the three previous editions held here”.
For the WC qualifying event each country will be represented by its two best pros available. The first selection criteria will be the players’ World Ranking. For those countries with no players ranked, their team members will be picked according to their rank at the top international Tours wherever they compete. For most Latin American and Caribbean countries their top two players at the Tour de las Americas’ Order of Merit will make the team.
The 2004 Nations Cup was a brilliant one for Mexico’s Alejandro Quiroz and Pablo Del Olmo. Their impressive pace set a few records on their way to the World Cup that was played in Seville, Spain. This year both players stay as the top two Mexicans in the World Rankings, Quiroz campaign has been highlighted by a top10 finish at a co-sanctioned event between the Asian and the European Tours.
Other players who came to El Tigre last year have enjoyed success this season. Such are the cases of Italy’s Alessandro Tadini and Austria’s Markus Brier at the European Tour. More teams as well as a higher standard of play are expected at this year’s Nations Cup, which will come to an end with a Pro-Am on Sunday, October 9th. |
