Mexico Consumer Confidence Falls in January
Jason Lange - Reuters go to original
Mexico City - Consumer confidence in Mexico fell in January amid expectations a slowdown in the United States will hit Mexico, the government said on Wednesday.
A government report showed the consumer confidence index fell to 103.5 from 105.6 the previous month.
Mexicans polled in January said their families were in better condition than a year before but they were more pessimistic about the future of the Mexican economy.
The U.S. economy now appears to be slowing sharply as the downturn in the housing market deepens. Many analysts are warning of a growing risk of recession.
Mexico relies heavily on commerce with the United States, where it sends goods like automobiles, clothing and farm produce. Billions of dollars are also sent home each year by Mexican immigrants working in America.
