58th Annual Billfish Tournament in Puerto Vallarta

November 5, 2013

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The copious fishing grounds of Banderas Bay and the Mexican Pacific are known by fishing experts to offer some of the best deep sea sports fishing in the world.

Home to an abundance of Sailfish, Blue and Black Marlin, Dorado, and Giant Yellowfin Tuna, Puerto Vallarta is known by big-game anglers as "the place" to go in Mexico for serious bill fishing.

One of the most prestigious national and international sportfishing tournaments on the West coast of Mexico, the "Torneo Internacional Puerto Vallarta de Pez Vela y Marlin" has been bringing anglers together for 3 exciting days of competative fishing in some of Mexico's finest waters for close to sixty years.

This year, the International Sailfish and Marlin Tournament celebrates its 58th year. Scheduled to take place in Puerto Vallarta from November 13th-16th, this popular annual event promises to be even bigger and better than ever - with thousands of dollars in cash and prizes to be awarded.

Year after year, this tournament has seen an increase in the number of participants from various countries and states within Mexico. This year, competitors from Mexican cities Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, Monterey, Tampico and Léon, the United States and Canada are expected.

The objective of this tournament is to promote sport fishing and the organization of tournaments and sportsmanship, while creating a sense of preservation for the abundant species that reside in the warm blue waters of Puerto Vallarta.

There are some changes to reflect these objectives this year. In an effort to protect wildlife and help preserve fish species, only marlin of over 220 lbs, sailfish of more than 77 lbs, tuna over 66 lbs, and mahi-mahi over 22 lbs will qualify. Sailfish teams may also participate in the mode of catch and release.
