Don't Believe Everything You Read

Our friends - wishing to remain anonymous - are pictured here wearing the Mardi Gras masks they purchased on the beach.
We recently had friends who were staying here in Puerto Vallarta with us for the winter months travel home by car. Our friends are in their 'golden years' and we were very concerned, due to recent news articles regarding border safety... or the lack thereof.

Here, with our friends' permission, is the account of their border crossing:

It was a fairly easy drive as far as Lagos de Marina, where we found an acceptable hotel. Tuesday we got to Saltillo and stayed in the Eurotel, which was excellent!

An easy drive to the border and a completely uneventful crossing at the Columbia Bridge, which is a few kilometers west of Nuevo Laredo. We didn't see a gun or a gun-slinger or any dead bodies. I believe the media, US especially, are doing a number on Mexico. Our Canadian friends and family were not the least bit uptight about our venturing into border 'kill zones.'

Each day we drove till we were tired, usually about 350 miles only. Each day we said to one another that we were glad that this was our last time to do the long drive. Now that we have our own car in Puerto Vallarta the flights back and forth keep looking better and better...

The next day we received a follow-up email:

Of course you can quote me; but, Sheila pointed out to me that we did see guns on the Mexico side of the border - army guns. There was a fairly large army presence just sort of hanging around and there were a couple of armored vehicles. When I said we 'didn't see any guns or gun-slingers,' I meant the "bad" guys shooting up the cops, etc. Thought I should point that out for the sake of accuracy.

Needless to say I think it is important that we all remember that news is media and should be enjoyed as a form of entertainment. Speaking of entertainment, our friends wish to keep their identities to themselves, so they are pictured here wearing the Mardi Gras masks they purchased on the beach.
