Mexico's 'Black Tourism'

Mexico is no longer just a tourist destination for those in search of paradisiacal beaches and impressive archaeological sites.

Visitors now come to experience so-called "Black Tourism".

It includes everything from tours of Tepito, the most dangerous neighbourhood of Mexico City, to the experience of becoming for a few hours an illegal immigrant sought by US police.

The tours are set in a park in the central state of Hidalgo. The course is set up to imitate the hardships that thousands of immigrants go through each year in attempts to illegally enter the US and escape poverty.

Mexico is in the list along with Afghanistan, Nepal, Palestine, Uganda, Kenya, and at least thirty other countries that the international agency Global Exchange offers itself as "reality tours" to experience and learn about social problems firsthand.
