April 13, 2011

Over 300 swimmers, including tourists and international competitors, took part in the 2011 Riviera Nayarit Aguas Abiertas open waters competition held in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Riviera Nayarit, Mexico - Debbie Henderson could not be more happy after last Sunday's results. This Canadian tourist visited Riviera Nayarit from April 4th until the 10th and got some added value during her magical and liberating vacation; she took home a trophy as the best swimmer for the category of 55 to 59 year old women open waters competition held at La Cruz de Huanacaxtle on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Henderson held her trophy (decorated by Huichol Indians) high in the air during the winner announcements, and when she brought it down she said it was the best souvenir she could ever get to bring back home. Afterwards she shook the hands of Manuel Chiu, a professional Mexican swimmer that won the World Cup at Rome in 2009. Manuel was stepping up the podium to receive the trophy for first place overall in this competition.

Riviera Nayarit Open Waters (Aguas Abiertas 2011) brought a wave of joy to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, not only because it was a lovely day but also because all the goals that the organizers (Nadoseguro) established were accomplished: they exceeded the 300 participants, important records were established and they got international competitors to attend, particularly in the Masters categories.

Competition started early, it was eight o'clock in the morning when the first kids went into the water at the beach next to Marina Riviera Nayarit at La Cruz, host of the event. Boys and girls went into the sea with great joy as their families cheered them on to improve their timing.

In the end, Manuel Chui took first place of the men's professional race, timing 1:04:28, and Andrea Gutierrez was the winner for the women's professionals, timing 1:12:13.

AND THE WINNERS ARE...
