Vallarta Ecology Group Reforesting Rio Pitillal

July 18, 2011

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Yesterday, members of the Puerto Vallarta Ecology Group launched the next phase of reforestation of trees on the banks of the Rio Pitillal. They expect to plant around 80 trees this year.

"The plan is to complete reforestation of the south bank of the Rio Pitillal, between the bridge and the Infonavit Federation bridge in Colonia San Esteban," said environmentalist and member of the Ecological Group, Marina Perez.

Last year, 65 trees were planted, of which 39 have disappeared, hence the need to continue with the reforestation project. Members of the Ecological Group are responsible for collecting seeds and planting in nurseries in their homes and those are the trees planted on the river banks.

Meanwhile, Claudia Cubillos also reported Sunday that reforested trees were lost from the north bank of the river, between Avenida Francisco Medina Ascencio and Francisco Villa. One of the obstacles that affects this project is that trees are lost due to vandalism by young people, mainly in the vicinity of the neighborhood by the Infonavit bridge.

Arechiga Odeth Saavedra, president of the Ecological Group, pointed out that they have been working on the issue of reforestation in Puerto Vallarta for eight years.

"We plant the trees during the rainy season because this is the best time for trees to have a higher percentage of survival, and we are dedicated to cleaning and watering. These activities are done in conjunction with the Arbor Day celebration, as well as being constant throughout the year," said Arechiga Saavedra.

It should be noted that during the event, parents took the opportunity to teach and share with their children the culture of tree care and the environmentalism.
