London, England – Mexico’s Laura Sanchez won the bronze medal in 3m springboard diving at the London Olympics on Sunday, giving her country its fifth medal at the 2012 Summer Games.

"This medal feels glorious, I needed one at an Olympic Games and finally got it. It’s been years and years of work and injuries, lots of stuff," Sanchez said.

China’s Minxia Wu took the gold medal, while her countrywoman, Zi He, won the silver medal in Sunday’s competition.

The 26-year-old Sanchez, who is from the western city of Guadalajara, scored 362.40 points, coming in behind Minxia’s 414.00 and Zi’s 379.20.

"My whole body was trembling before diving and I was nervous and happy at the same time that I was in an Olympic final at my third Games. I enjoyed each dive and every moment," Sanchez said. "I was happy with how things turned out."

Sanchez, who was not among the favorites in the event, edged out Italy’s Tania Cagnotto and Australia’s Sharlee Stratton in the battle for the bronze.

"I wasn’t one of the favorites and I didn’t care, I just wanted to come out of that pool happy. If I had ended up fourth, I would still have been happy because I would have improved my score. The fact that I won a bronze medal is big, my little angel came around today," Sanchez said.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon called Sanchez and congratulated her on taking the bronze medal.

"What joy and pride to see @_lauritasanchez on the podium and receiving a bronze medal. Once again, congratulations. Good for Mexico!" Calderon said in a Twitter posting.
