SECTUR Reports a Banner Number of Holiday Visitors

The Christmas - New Year holiday season in Mexico is celebrated on a large scale and with great enthusiasm and zeal. This season more than 11 million travelers will visit Mexico's tourist destinations.

Mexico City, Mexico - Mexico is a world class tourist destination for the diversity of options it offers national and international visitors.

The Secretaria de Turismo de Mexico, or SECTUR, estimates that during this Christmas - New Year holiday season, from December 20th to January 6th, that 11 million travelers will visit Mexico's tourist destinations. Approximately 10.2 million will be domestic travelers and 817,000 will be international tourists.

Tourist expenditures will be approximately $327 million USD, up 7.8 percent compared to data for the comparable season in 2011-1012.

Among the domestic tourists, 35 percent, or 3.6 million, will visit beach resorts, while the remaining 65 percent, or 6.6 million, will travel to cities.

Regarding the 817,000 foreign tourists, 79 percent, or 647,000, will be in beach resorts, while the remaining 21 percent, or 170,000, will be in large big cities.

It is also estimated that, of the total domestic tourists, 85 percent will travel by car, 10 percent will go by air, and the remaining 5 percent by other means of transportation.
