Vegas Airport Doubles Mexican Flights for 'El Grito'

September 13, 2013

Las Vegas, Nevada — McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas is more than doubling its number of flights from Mexico for Mexican Independence Day weekend.

The airport says thirty-seven commercial flights will be coming directly to Las Vegas from Mexico on Thursday and Friday, more than double the norm.

The holiday is a major tourist draw for Las Vegas. This year’s festivities include a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Mexico’s Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, parades, a mariachi festival, and concerts by Latin music superstars including Enrique Iglesias, Marc Anthony, and Luis Miguel.

The airport says it’s seeing greater interest in Las Vegas among Mexican tourists. Passenger traffic from America’s southern neighbor is up 42% from three years ago.

Airport officials are bringing in a mariachi band for those days to welcome visitors.
