Mexico Launches First Trusted Traveler Program for US

January 20, 2014

Mexico's trusted traveler program 'Programa Viajero Confiable' is designed to accelerate the process for US citizens entering Mexico. The program provides pre-approval for travelers who are deemed low-risk.

Mexico recently launched its first trusted traveler program open to US citizens entitled Programa Viajero Confiable.

The program is designed to expedite the process for US citizens to enter Mexico via major airports by providing a pre-approval process for low-risk travelers. It is a program akin to the current US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Global Entry program designed to streamline the process of foreign visitors entering the US.

US citizens interested in the program may apply online, pay a fee, and complete an in-person interview at a designated location. During the interview process, the person will have their photo taken and complete a biometric scan of their irises and fingerprints.

Once their documents have been approved, members of the program will be active in the system for five years and will have the ability to access digital kiosks to complete the entry process.

Members of DHS and CBP were present during the official launch of the program in late December 2013. During the opening ceremony, Alan Bersin, assistant secretary of DHS’s Office of International Affairs, became the first US citizen to enroll in the program.

The program is seen as a step toward more collaboration through the US - Mexico 21st Century Border Management Initiative. It is expected to enhance relations between the US and Mexico in terms of securing the borders while allowing for more trade and cultural exploration between the countries.
