Cruise Ships Veer from Los Cabos to Puerto Vallarta

September 24, 2014

In the wake of Hurricane Odile, Princess Cruises said its 1,970-passenger Coral Princess, which had been scheduled to port in Los Cabos on September 26, will skip that stop and call instead at Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - With authorities still cleaning up Mexico's Baja peninsula after the impact of Hurricane Odile, Princess Cruises has become the first cruise line to cancel a port call to Cabo San Lucas. Princess said its 1,970-passenger Coral Princess, which had been scheduled to port in Los Cabo on September 26, will skip that stop and call instead at Puerto Vallarta.

And Princess is not the only cruise line considering itinerary changes due to the damage to infrastructure and tourism services in Los Cabos.

In June, Carnival Cruise Lines, the biggest operator of Mexican Riviera itineraries, announced that they'd be resuming week long cruises with stops at Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and a full day at Mazatlan. But in the wake of Hurricane Odile, they are looking at making changes to their itineraries as well.

A Carnival spokesman said the company is keeping an eye on the progress of hurricane clean-up and continues to assess the situation while looking for ways to aid in local storm relief efforts.

The President of the Mexican Association of Cruise Ship Tourism, José Arturo Musi, says that an estimated 40 cruises are expected to make itinerary adjustments - skipping Cabo San Lucas and adding extra days in the ports of Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.

Representing a total of 80,000 passengers, these cruise itinerary changes represent a negative financial impact for Los Cabos, but will economically benefit the port cities of Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan.

According to Puerto Vallarta's Maritime Terminal Director, Miguel Angel García Beltrán, Puerto Vallarta's 2014-15 cruise season was already off to a good start with a total of 117 cruise ship arrivals expected before year's end — 10 more than were originally projected - and that was before Odile devastated Los Cabos, so that number could increase.

García Beltrán is projecting that 2015 will be even better. A total of 142 cruise ship arrivals have already been scheduled and confirmed for next year, increasing Puerto Vallarta calls by 22% when compared to this year.
