Professional Golf 'Tees Off' in Mexico This Week

November 13, 2014

Hosted at an unparalleled resort complex in Riviera Maya, the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, Mexico’s only PGA Tour event, will feature 132 professional golfers participating in 4 rounds of stroke play competition.

Riviera Maya, Mexico - Golf in Mexico gets a great boost this week with both the LPGA and PGA Tour playing events there.

The PGA's OHL Classic at Mayakoba will be played on the Greg Norman designed El Camaleon Golf Club at Mayakoba, located just north of Playa Del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula. The tournament is Mexico’s only PGA Tour event and is regarded as one of the finest by professionals and spectators alike.

Golf history was made there in 2007 when the OHL Classic at Mayakoba became the first ever PGA Tour event to ever be contested outside of the United States and Canada. It become a staple on the tour schedule after the historic finish of that first contest, when Fred Funk won in a playoff over Jose Coceres.

The event will feature 132 professional golfers participating in four rounds of stroke play competition. With a purse of $6 million dollars, the OHL Classic at Mayakoba boasts the largest amount of prize money of any golf tournament in Latin America. It is the only event in the Latin American region that offers its champion an invitation to the Masters. Harris English won this event last year by four shots over Brian Stuard. Stuard also finishing runner-up in 2010.

The tournament often had to play second fiddle to the Accenture World Golf Championship event, but since the introduction of the wrap around schedule in 2013 it has taken a stand alone place among events on the PGA Tour and attracts a very stronger field. Retief Goosen, Davis Love III, Fred Funk, Scott Verplank, Nick Watney, Angel Cabrera, Lucas Glover, Padraig Harrington, Mike Weir, and Jalisco, Mexico's own Carlos Ortiz are just some of the top golfers who will be competing in this prestigious tournament.

Lorena Ochoa

The event will be telecast on ESPN2 in Mexico and Central America starting Thursday, November 13th, through Sunday, November 16th, as well as on Golf Channel Latin America in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean on the same dates.

LPGA

The penultimate event of this year's LPGA tour is the Lorena Ochoa Invitational at the Club de Golf Mexico in Mexico City.

The 72-hole limited field tournament will take place from November 13th-16th and is hosted by Guadalajara's Lorena Ochoa. The tournament, which was played annually from 2008 until 2013 at the Guadalajara Country Club, will feature thirty-six of the world's best female golfers, including the top three players in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings.

No. 1 Inbee Park, No. 2 Stacy Lewis, and No. 3 Lydia Ko are grouped together and are scheduled to go off as the final tee time of the first round. That is notable because the top three in the standings at the conclusion of this event will be the only players at next week’s season-ending CME Group Tour Championship - guaranteed to win the $1 million race’s jackpot if they win.

Host Lorena Ochoa will compete in the pro-am, and is excited to be playing in Mexico City.

"We're in a great venue, a beautiful venue and a big thanks to the Club de golf Mexico for hosting us, to their members for offering their club." Ochoa said. "I think the most important thing is that the local city government is involved. It's a positive move. Also for the sponsors, most are located here and it's a great opportunity for them to invite some of their friends and clients to take part in the event this week. So it's a great move overall."

The tournament will be televised on Golf Channel - Thursday/Sunday - 5 pm to 7 pm.
