3 Surfing Competitions Coming to Mexico This Summer

go to original
June 8, 2018

Each Mexico event is being organized with a festival component that will include a series of activities and events, such as surf lessons, clinics, concerts, pool parties, exposurf and a cinema on the beach.

Three major surf spectaculars are coming to the shores of Mexico this summer according to the Surf Open League, which organizes surf events throughout the nation. The best surfers in the world will come together at Puerto Escondido, Acapulco and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo during the summer season.

"The goal is to transform Mexico into the surfing capital of Latin America," said Gustavo Duccini, director of the Surf Open League at a press conference in Mexico City.

The first event takes place in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, which is known for its outdoor adventures. Although surf season opened on June 1 in Puerto Escondido, dates for the first event, the Puerto Escondido Cup, are pending.

The event will bring together the top 24 tube riders in the world, including seven from Mexico, to Zicatela beach, which is known for swells that can reach up to 75 feet. Competition dates and times are still pending, as organizers will watch weather conditions for optimal waves, which can be predicted up to 72 hours in advance.

The second event will take place in Acapulco, Guerrero, from July 20 to 22. An international qualifying event for World Surf League status, Surf Open Acapulco expects to attract more than one hundred top-ranked surfers from 15 countries around the world.

The final event, scheduled from August 31 to September 2, is the Surf Open Ixtapa, which also takes place in Guerrero State.

Organizers say they picked the trio of cities primarily for their excellent wave conditions, but also noted the professionalism of the people in each host town.

Each event is being organized with a festival component that will include a series of activities and events, such as surf lessons, clinics, concerts, pool parties, exposurf and a cinema on the beach. The Open Surf League says it hopes these events also raise awareness of responsible care of the oceans.
