T+L Names San Miguel de Allende the World's Top City

July 18, 2018

With its colorful, flower-festooned architecture and cobblestoned streets, Mexico's San Miguel de Allende has the feel of a village, but its large population of artists lends it a cosmopolitan air.

Every year for their World's Best Awards survey, Travel + Leisure (T+L) magazine asks readers to choose their favorite cities based on sights and landmarks, culture, food, friendliness, shopping and overall value. A teeming street life, a friendly population, and a harmonious relationship with nature are equally essential.

In 2018, Mexico reigns supreme. For the second year in a row, San Miguel de Allende, a colonial oasis in the country's central highlands, was named the 'World's Top City' for 2018. (Its appearance atop T+L's 2017 list was a first in the awards' 23-year history.)

It's no wonder that San Miguel de Allende has topped T+L's list of the world's best cities for two years in a row. With its colorful, flower-festooned architecture and cobblestoned streets, San Miguel has the feel of a village, but its large population of artists lends it a cosmopolitan air. "This is one of the best cities in the world," one T+L reader wrote. "There are lots of stores selling local artisan crafts, jewelry, and art. Bring an extra suitcase!"

Oaxaca City has moved into second place from last year's sixth. A World Heritage site, the Capital of the State of Oaxaca is a culturally rich city with a lovely small town charm. The city's colonial architecture, colorful buildings and cobblestone streets offer picturesque views that make it unforgettable.

Meanwhile, Mexico City made a welcome return to the top 15. "Mexico City is beautiful," one T+L reader wrote. "Even though it's overpopulated and the traffic can sometimes be a challenge, the culture and history outweigh any inconveniences. The food is outstanding and can really be eye-opening."
