So You're Nothing But A Tale? Pere Greenham
This headline corresponds to the invitation to local writers made by the bilingual cultural magazine in&out to participate in their first short story contest.
Judges received a total of 73 entries, 21 in English. Judges Don Gallery, president of the Puerto Vallarta Writers Club, writer-reporter Heather Wilson, and correspondent to U.S. and British publications Ryc Reinks went through the pseudonym-signed manuscripts several times prior to jointly deliberating and choosing the winners.
The prize-delivering event was held Saturday, July 20, at the well-stocked and air-conditioned Libros Libros Books Books. First prize went to "A Distant Drum" by the co-owner of A Page in the Sun Café Alex Gómez. Maggie Stoffels' "The Oyster Snatchers" was credited with the honorary prize.
Gómez received $5,000 pesos and dinner for two at Café des Artistes, while Ms. Stoffels got a $1,000-peso book credit from the aforementioned bookstore, plus dinner for two at Porto Bello. "Bailan Fantasmas" by Ricardo Simental won the Spanish-language first position, and the honorary prize was a tie between Rafael Torres Meyer's "Humedad" and Ricardo Cham's "Aline Sonríe." |
