email this pageprint this pageemail usDenise Derameé - PVNN

What started out as a modest annual regatta has become the premier sailing event on the West Coast of Mexico drawing 40-60 boats each year.

Nuevo Vallarta - The Thirteenth Annual Banderas Bay Regatta is scheduled to take place on March 11-15th at the beautiful Paradise Village Hotel and Marina in Nuevo Vallarta. Organized and run by two local nonprofit organizations: Regatas y Deportes Marítimos - Bahía de Banderas and the Vallarta Yacht Club, what started out as a modest annual regatta has become, without question, the premier sailing event on the West Coast of Mexico drawing 40-60 boats each year.

For sailors, the fun begins on Friday March 11th at 1 PM, with the "Start Your Heart Out" practice run in Banderas Bay at the Committee Boat/Start Line. On Saturday the 12th at 10 AM the fun continues with Dinghy Races at the Paradise Village Marina Basin, followed by a mandatory Skippers Meeting at 3 PM and a Race Seminar at 4 PM at the Paradise Village Hotel, and a Welcome Reception featuring the Ballet Folklórico at the Paradise Village Hotel Amphitheater from 7-9:30 PM.

The public is invited to join in the fun on Sunday, March 13th at the traditional boat parade scheduled to begin at 12 noon in the Nuevo Vallarta Channel, where each boat will be introduced along with its crew. Then, at 1:30 PM the public is invited to experience the thrill of watching seven categories of yachts and sailboats from around the world compete for trophies. And, since the prime objective of the Banderas Bay Regatta is to have fun, after the races, sailors and non-sailors alike are invited to enjoy live music at the Vallarta Yacht Club's Open House from 6-11 PM near the boat ramp at the Paradise Village Marina.

On Monday Mar 14th the fun continues at 1 PM as all categories of yachts and sailboats join in the 2nd race across Banderas Bay, in hopes of being the first to reach the finish line and another night of fun and fraternization at the Open House hosted by the Vallarta Yacht Club from 6-11 PM.

The third and final day of Regatta revelry begins at 1 PM on Tuesday the 15th as all classes compete in the final race across Banderas Bay. Topping off the festivities a Grand Awards Banquet will be held for Regatta participants at the Paradise Village Hotel's beach area, giving sailors the opportunity to get all "decked-out" for a of night dining and dancing to live music from 7-10 PM.

If you are planning to race in the Thirteenth Annual Banderas Bay Regatta, you should know that Paradise Village Hotel and Marina is offering regatta participants a 50% discount on Boat Slips from March 10th to March 16th 2005. All reservations are made on a "first-come-first-serve" basis, so please call Dick Markie, Marina Dock Master, at 226-6728 as soon as possible.
