Mexican Groups Protest Europe Trade Pact
email this pageprint this pageemail usUnited Press International

Mexico City, Mexico - Civil groups demanded Mexico renegotiate the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, La Jornada reported Tuesday.

The groups targeted Mexican President Vicente Fox during his meeting with European diplomats Monday, with messages against negotiations with Europe for more public services in areas like energy.

Currently, the Mexican constitution does not allow foreign companies to invest in Mexico's oil sector, but various legislative reforms proposed by Fox would change that.

The non-governmental organizations also said Fox must address in "an urgent manner" the numerous cases of human rights violations in indigenous communities.

Fox responded to the groups that his government has a "great alliance" with social organizations, "to work together for the common good and implement a more democratic and equitable Mexico."
