A NEW Twist on the Phantom

Puerto Vallarta - Technical difficulties resolved and unforeseen delays overcome, "A Night with the Phantom" at Santa Barbara Theater will be seen this Sunday evening. You may even have seen the original movie, the successful Broadway play, or the recent movie. But you haven't seen it like this.

We are going to present what may be the most innovative production in the history of Puerto Vallarta Theater. Last Sunday, theater patrons got a taste of this unique multi-media presentation when Kathleen Hennen and Sol Rose sang the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber against the background of Joel Schumacher's movie.

This Sunday, May 22, Kathleen and Sol will sing while Lon Chaney's original 1925 silent movie "The Phantom of the Opera" screens. This mixing of material from two different generations will be remembered as one of the most original presentations ever seen in Puerto Vallarta or anywhere in the world of theater.

The evening for theater goers starts at 6:30 when the doors open. Patrons who have selected the dinner option will be served salad when they are seated. A little after 7, the house lights will be dimmed and a classic cartoon will be shown. This will be followed by the entr้e, which will be followed by another classic cartoon. At the conclusion of the second cartoon, dessert will be served.

Those who have selected "show only" may order from an ala carte menu, may enjoy one of the many quality restaurants in the area, or may relax, have a cocktail and enjoy the pre-show cartoons. About 8 PM, the main show will commence, with Kathleen Hennen and Sol Rose singing the Andrew Lloyd Webber's songs at key places during the movie.

Regular theatergoers need no introduction to Kathleen Hennen, whose recent accomplishments include "Abba Cadabra," "Manhattan Nights," and "Some Enchanted Evening." Sol Rose, a "semi-retired" entertainer with a long list of accomplishments (and the owner of a very popular local restaurant,) has been recently seen at The Blue Chairs on Sunday evenings, and in "Manhattan Nights" and "The Last Time I Saw Paris" at La Petit Restaurant.

Gaston Leroux wrote this exciting variation on the classic Beauty and the Beast story almost a hundred years ago. It is likely that "The Phantom of the Opera" would have been as neglected as most of his other works if Universal Studios had not selected it as a vehicle for Lon Chaney. Lon Chaney's role in this movie has been called his best acting performance. It was also his best achievement in makeup.

To enhance your evening's enjoyment, two classic cartoons will be shown prior to the main show. Each evening, a different pair of cartoons will be shown from a collection that includes such notable cartoon characters as: Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Dudley Doright, Bugs Bunny, Barney Google, Flip the Frog, Andy Panda, Popeye and Scrappy.

Every Sunday through the end of the month, audiences will have their choice of show only, or dinner and show. That wonderful chef at Santa Barbara Theater, Santiago, has conjured up three delicious entrees with theme names such as "Opera House Beef," "Chandelier Chicken" and "Phantom Fish Filet."

Reservations may be made at Santa Barbara Theater, 351 Olas Altas, or by calling 223-2048. Tickets are only 100 pesos for the Show-Only option, or 250 pesos for Dinner and Show. Seating is limited.
