These programs will further the community's efforts for the cleanliness and sustainability of Banderas Bay beaches.
Puerto Vallarta - The first annual meeting of the Committee of Clean Beaches of Jalisco and Nayarit [Comité Playas Limpias Jalisco-Nayarit] took place in Puerto Vallarta on April 4th & 5th.

According to the Director of Municipal Public Services Martín Vázquez Mendoza, "this committee is the first clean beach program to be formed in the Mexican Republic, consolidating not only localities but states and all these programs in order to educate the people in cleaning and maintaining the beaches."

Oralia Rice Rodriguez, undersecretary of the government tourism board SECTUR, emphasized, "Clean beaches are synonymous with staying competitive in the tourism market, and around Banderas Bay, local and states authorities are working together to keep our beaches clean and beautiful."

Over the last eight months, seven groups have been busy keeping our beaches clean and encouraging citizenship participation in beach cleanup programs. One of these groups is the Investigation and Monitoring Team, which works together with the University of Guadalajara to evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of the committee's programs.

Another group is working on the promotion of resources, ensuring that the citizens in every single municipality around Banderas Bay are aware of the Committee's need for volunteer participation in the Beach Cleanup programs. Finally, there is an unit that is responsible for letting all of the participants know how the program's efforts are measuring up, and for providing plans to further accomplish the committee's goals and objectives.

During the two-day conference Gustavo González Villaseñor, the mayor of Puerto Vallarta, thanked all of the groups for their efforts and presented a series of diverse proposals for developing and implementing additional innovative and cost-effective programs for beach cleanup, maintenance, and minimization of garbage on our beaches.

These programs will further the community's efforts for the cleanliness and sustainability of Banderas Bay beaches. Proposed plans include: providing proper drainage and waste management by adding more trash receptacles and hygienic public bathrooms; offering beach-goers sanitary drinking water; and heightening security and safety measures for swimmers.

State Committee of Jalisco Nayarit representative Vázquez Mendoza proposed structuring an additional plan for collecting the excess amount of garbage the public generates. The municipal functionary said; "On the average, 3.09 pounds of garbage is generated per capita, and this exceeds the national modal. We need to educate the public about taking care of the environment so that alternative measures will not be necessary . . . courses of action that would affect people's pockets."
